Spotlight: Kerry Ellis

prkerrye5492If you’re a frequent  frequenter of the West End then you’ll know who Kerry Ellis is and already be convinced of her awesomeness so you can stop reading here.

Everyone else, here’s why you should know about Kerry Ellis:

tn-1000_kedp31. She is THE Elphaba.

I know that’s a pretty bold statement to make, given the wonderful Idina Menzel originated the role, but if you’re like me and got into Wicked during the Ellis-era then no one can sing Defying Gravity quite like her.  Don’t believe me?  Listen to it here and then go buy Anthems

cats42.  Her ‘Memory’ gives you goosebumps

Don’t believe me?  Go see her in Cats at the London Palladium before the run is over and enjoy the sneak peak here.  Singing cats – what’s not to like?!

3. Prior to Wicked and Cats, she has starred in We Will Rock You, Oliver!, My Fair Lady, Miss Saigon and Les Miserables.

So pretty much every major production in the West End?  Yup.

4. She frequently collaborates with Brian May

Killer guitar player + Killer voice.  Now if that doesn’t prove to you that she is Somebody to Love, then I don’t know what will!

5. Finally, and most importantly, her voice

She could sing anything.  Like literary anything and I would still love her voice.  The best bit?  When she sings and holds the ‘long’ notes in Defying Gravity, Memory and Let It Go (If you’re like me and are one of approximately 10 people in the Western world who hasn’t seen Frozen then the song was originally sung in the film by Idina Menzel so there’s a lovely synergy about this).

What I’d like to see from Kerry in the future?  I would really love TPTB to make a film of Wicked and for Kerry to reprise her role as Elphaba her to keep making albums, perhaps some original songs (I’m generally not a massive fan of cover songs with some obvious exceptions) and to continue being a fabulous leading lady of the West End.

Find Kerry Ellis on Twitter, Facebook and the Web.
