Spotlight: Jack Savoretti

Don’t tell anyone but Jack Savoretti is a bit of a hidden gem that those of us who like to pretend that they know music keep in their back pocket to judge others: “Have you hard of Jack Savoretti’s new album?” “Who’s he?” Cue shaking of head slowly in despair and move on to find a more discerning individual to converse with.

Well folks, it is well past time that everyone knows who Jack Savoretti is.  He is done with being an underrated gem and with his latest release Written In Scars, this is his time to make it big.

Jack first came on the music scene with 2007’s Between The Minds.  A debut album chock full of awesome songs is a rare thing to behold: No One’s Aware, Without, Between The Minds, Lovely Fool and I was obsessed with Blackrain for months – from the opening guitar solo to his haunting vocals.    And Soldier’s Eyes …. gah!

With a soldier’s eyes I’ve seen inside the devil’s dreams where young men die
And graveyards open up their arms for mothers left to cry
I have seen the bleeding and I hate what we’ve done
But just like every other fool here I’ll keep marching on

Harder Than Easy is probably my least favourite album, if I had to choose between all 4 releases.    However, Breaking News is a real highlight and something that everyone can relate to and has a riff which drums into your brain.

Vagabond from Between The Storm is really catchy and has a kickass guitar solo in the middle.  However, Last Call is probably my favourite song of Jack Savoretti’s third album for the melody.

Kick drum in my head
Cold prison of an empty bed
And the sight of the sunlight scares me half to death

And  Lifetime because of the lyrics

We will all say goodbye
But that’s alright
Happens to everyone
The “alright” part is a lie
But that’s alright
We tell it to everyone
If you feel like you’re wasting your time
Waste it if you want to
The reason does not have to rhyme
Waste it if you want to

There’s only so much you can do in one lifetime
Take it easy
There’s only so much you can do in one lifetime
Oh, take it easy

And finally, Jack’s latest release Written In Scars.  What an awesome addition to his repertoire.  Asking me to choose favourites would be impossible but I’m going to try:  Home, Don’t Mind Me, The Other Side of Love, The Hunger, Wasted, Fight ‘Til The End, Tie Me Down …..

Behind the cloth, behind the paint behind the flesh and bone
Behind the laughter and the pain, behind the eyes lies my soul
When the tears get too heavy, I must teach myself to cry

Tie me down I’ll go wild, I’ll go wild
You can’t hold down a homeless child, a homeless child
There’s got to be a way
I’m a hunter for a better day

Yes, so definitely the whole thing.  There isn’t a song in the whole album that doesn’t worm its way into your brain and make you want to listen to it on repeat and if that isn’t proof of a stellar album then I don’t know what is.
