Spotlight: Lady Antebellum

Lady Antebellum are probably my favourite country band.

They came onto my radar when I was first “discovering” country music and they only had one album out and I stumbled on I Run To You and then came the obsession with the Need You Now album.  They sort of faded away for me for awhile after that as the Christmas albums and Own The Night didn’t make a big impact for me.  Then came the CMT Crossroads episode with Stevie Nicks.

Lady Antebellum and Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks is a goddess.  She is queen.  Fleetwood Mac are my favourite band.  If Stevie says she had a dream about joining Lady Antebellum then you damn well going to believe that they are awesome.

The whole Crossroads episode is just a piece of music artistry from start to finish.  Highlights include Edge of Seventeen where Hillary and Stevie riff off each other, the harmonies in Need You Now, the acoustic guitars and harmonies of Landslide and of course Rhiannon.

June 2017 saw them release Heart Break and whilst there are excellent vocals, it is never going to be one of my favourite albums of theirs.  That honour belongs to Need You Now.  No, 747.  No, Golden. No, Need You Now.  I can’t decide.  I read an article about how they decided to take a break in 2015 because they were tired with the songs from 747 on the radio.  I’m sorry but that radio-friendly country music is the music I love.  Anyway, I think Heart Break is a grower.

With a new album in my Library and tickets bought for when they play in London later this year, there’s no better time to focus on my favourite Lady Antebellum songs and kick off what I hope will be the start of a regular music feature on this blog.

All For Love
Golden

Love, something you know nothing of
Cause love don’t turn and run
And leave you standing in the dark.

Okay I know that I’ve said that these are all my collective favourites and it would be impossible to put them in any kind of ranking order but if I were to do that, All For Love would totally be top of the list.

As You Turn Away
Own The Night

One step my heart is breaking
One more my hands are shaking
The door is closing
And I just can’t change it

The lyrics to this song are heartbreaking but it has some amazing harmonies, not to mention the rousing moment at 3.03.

Bartender
747

Tonight I’ll let a stranger pull me on the floor
Spin me round and let ’em buy a couple more
But before it goes too far I’ll let him down easy
Cause tonight is all about
Dancing with my girls to the DJ
Put that song on replay

Friday night party song from the opening beats.  I can’t wait to hear this one live.

Compass
Golden

Alright
Yeah it’s been a bumpy road
Roller coasters
High and low

I can see it now, the crowd clapping their hands and screaming out the chorus along with the banjo.

Falling For You
747

There’s fire in your eyes.
There’s magic in your touch.
It’s too early to say,
But it feels like love

The piano guitar and then the drumbeat intro gives the song a bit of an edge.  A rocky love song.

Get To Me
Golden

Don’t know where you are,
But I want you just like lightning
Shooting straight out of the sky,
Come and strike me with your light igniting
Yeah, igniting.

Love the 1.50 “You got to show up and kiss me” crescendo.

Home Is Where The Heart Is
Lady Antebellum

It took leaving for me to understand
Sometimes your dreams just aren’t what life has planned

What I always think of as a typical country song full of love for your “Momma” and your home town.

Lie With Me
747

Go put your favorite Motown record on
Do what we need to feel it all night long
Make me believe you ain’t already gone
Let’s make our last time our best time

If you listen to the lyrics it’s actually a sad break-up song but it’s not a tragic ballad by any means.

Long Stretch Of Love
747

There’s a long stretch of love
Coming down the line
I’m your rock that won’t ever roll
And baby you’ll be mine
I’ll be right here beside you
If these good times get tough
Baby we’re in for a long stretch of love

When you read reviews, people who know what they’re talking about often refer to how they can hear the influence of such-and-such artist in a song.  I hardly ever see beyond the song I’m actually listening to but I make an exception for Long Stretch Of Love: This song sounds like it could have come straight off of a Fleetwood Mac album

Love This Pain
Need You Now

It’s like I love this life
When nothing’s right, yeah something’s wrong
It’s like I’m just not me
If I can’t be a sad, sad song

I guess for most people the most famous song from this album is the title track but Love This Pain is the song that has really stuck with me from the opening guitar and “Come on” to the very end.  The first Lady Antebellum song I was obsessed with.

Need You Now
Need You Now

Picture perfect memories scattered all around the floor.
Reaching for the phone ’cause I can’t fight it anymore.

Whilst the rest of the world was obsessed with this song, it failed to hit the mark for a long time until it kind of clicked.  I think it deserves to make it on the list of my favourite songs but only just.

Our Kind Of Love
Need You Now

Skipping rocks and leaving footprints
Down along the riverbank
Always holding hands, never making plans
Just living in the moment, babe

This song is such a happy song with an awesome guitar solo in the middle.

Perfect Day
Need You Now

It was the perfect day
What I’d give if I could find a way to stay
Lost in this moment now
Ain’t worried about tomorrow
When you’re busy livin in a perfect day.

I first really got into this song when I was browsing songs for one of my Summer Mixes.  This is definitely one for a summertime road-trip.

Ready To Love Again
Need You Now

Just when we think that love will never find you
You runaway but still it’s right behind you, oh
It’s just something that you can’t control

The harmonies in the chorus blend so well.

Teenage Heart
Heart Break

We were fireflies and shooting stars
We were burning up from the start
And we’d say
Are we going to live forever
I love you til my dying day
But sometimes hearts get swept up in the waves

Every country album needs a song about a childhood love and this is it for their latest release.  I hope they play this new song on their tour.

Think About You
Heart Break

My heart is bulletproof

Probably my favourite song on Heart Break.  The “You-ooh-ooh-ohh-ohh”s draw me in.

When You Got A Good Thing
Need You Now

You know you keep on bringin out the best of me
And I need you now even more than the air I breathe
You can make me laugh when I wanna cry
This will last forever I just know, I know

3:50 EPIC guitar solo love.

747
747

I’m looking out from a window seat
Halfway back, aisle 23
Man I wish that I could fly this thing
Give a little more gas
Just a little more speed

I was baffled as to why a band would name their album after an airplane but I kind of get it now.
