Following the kidnapping of Sam’s wife, Michelle Hanna, Sam goes rogue from the NCIS team and attempts to stop his arch nemesis Tahir Khaled from ever targeting his family again.
So Michelle died. And not in a heroic blaze of glory. In a tortuously slow suffocating-in-a-metal-box-whilst-Sam-watched kind of way.
Poor Sam. Luckily for me, whilst I like him, if I had to choose someone in/related the team to die then it would have to be Michelle.
The finale was of course focused on the fallout from Michelle’s death with Sam determined to find Tahir and exact revenge. It played out exactly like I thought it would with Sam ditching Callen and going it alone ….. (or not as the case may be). What I didn’t see coming was Tahir’s audacity at stealing Michelle’s body … too far, way too far. And also, not to be a stickler for plot details and all but surely having killed Michelle and made Sam suffer would you really stick around town just to play games when you had a chance to get the hell out of dodge.
I liked the show bringing Sabatino back and having him team up with Callen, hopefully proving himself once and for all to be a good guy. Despite this being a very dark and serious episode there were moments of humour too: Sabatino “Just so we’re clear, this is not a safe alternative to smoking boys”, Deeks’s telephone call with Tahir, the whole “You know Sam Hanna isn’t one word”, Nell driving, Hetty/Eric …..
Of course my favourite part of the episode was the Deeks/Kensi proposal which was so very them.
Marty Deeks, will you marry me?
Come on, baby. You gotta stand up. You can’t do this.
Deeks, I think I just did.
No, but you can’t, ‘cause the guy has to…the guy has to propose.
Ah Really? ‘Cause I think it’s 2017, and you kinda had your shot.
Not to be a stickler for detail but I actually proposed three times if you count the very romantic version I did whilst you were in a coma …. baby what are you doing?
Life is really short, Deeks. I mean, we saw that today. We see it everyday. And I don’t know how much time either one of us has left, but I do know this – I want to spend the rest of what I have, with you. So, what’s it gonna be?
I mean I don’t know, this is a lot for a girl to process …
You’re such an idiot
I love you
I love you
Yes, absolutely, what the hell yes … my God did that just happen? Let’s take a look at this thing … well I gotta be honest, I thought that it’ll have a little more bling to it
Oh no, you know me, I’m more bang than bling
That’s right, sunshine and gunpowder
I love the reference to sunshine and gunpowder so ten points for continuity but talking of continuity …. I STILL WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN THE BOX THOUGH.
Touching ending with Sam/Michelle’s body and telling Callen to look after the team whilst he spends some time with his children. NCIS: Los Angeles isn’t known for its episodic music but Tim Halperin’s Forever And A Day was the perfect song to close this episode.
Overall, it’s been a mixed season. It was tough having Kensi injured for half the season in order to accommodate Daniela’s pregnancy and with Miguel Ferrer/Granger dying and being written out it all feels rather disjointed.
Next season is going to bring us some cute Deeks/Kensi wedding moments but also the shadow of Deeks having to do Whiting’s bidding and Sam getting over the loss of Michelle.
