The story of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the aftermath, which includes the city-wide manhunt to find the terrorists responsible.
The people behind docudramas always have the unenviable task of making a film engaging and gripping to an audience who already knows the plot and how it’s all going to end. Patriots Day did an admirable job turning the real life events of the Boston Marathon bombings into a feature film that held your attention and tugged at the heartstrings in all the right places.
❥ The scenes of the wounded victims and random body parts at the finish line of the marathon are not for the fainthearted
❥ The blending of real life TV/CCTV footage with the filmed scenes worked really well and served as a very stark reminder to the viewers that this was real life not the plot of a Hollywood script.
❥ I didn’t realise that White Hat ran over his brother. Brutal.
❥ I can’t believe the amount of grenades thrown/shots fired during the standoff in Watertown. Hats off to the local police.
❥ There was the typical insertion of humorous one-liners to ease the tension and make the audience smile. Some of them were cringeworthy and some of them I liked like the female cop on top of the roof and her back-and-forth with the heavily armed FBI sharpshooters
❥ I thought that the inclusion of video segments by the real people involved at the end of the film was a really good idea and very touching.
