Spotlight: Lady Gaga

I have managed to spend a record amount of time avoiding Lady Gaga’s whole musical existence (aside of Poker Face) but I have heard so many wonderful things about Joanne that I finally felt I had to tackle the enigma that is Lady Gaga.

The verdict is that she is definitely an artist with two halves  – songs I like and songs I absolutely despise.

So having listened to her discography chronologically, here are the highs and the lows.

Tracks to ❤:

Poker Face
This song is insanely catchy and the only song of hers I knew for a long time

Eh Eh (Nothing I Can Say)
A pop song that wouldn’t be out of place in the 90s

Disco Heaven
This song is successful in doing what it says in the title and makes me feel like I want to dance

Bad Romance
This song needs no introduction

Catchy song

Born This Way
The Brothers & Sisters series finale introduced me to this song.  Whenever I listen to it I still always think of the Walkers dancing to it at Sarah’s wedding

The Queen
I can’t believe this track is relegated to the bonus tracks when it’s one of the only decent songs of the album.  The guitar and rocky nature obviously help with that

You And I
Rocky number

Do What U Want (feat. R. Kelly)
The first song on Artpop that I actually like.

Diamond Heart
Joanne is off to a good start with this song.  Before I knew it, I was singing along to the chorus

John Wayne
We can only hope that the next Lady Gaga album is full of songs like this!

Million Reasons
I knew if I persevered long enough I would stumble upon a ballad

Come To Mama
A little bit of sax takes a good song to great status.

Tracks to ☠:

There are numerous songs that I dislike so these are just the absolute worst that have no redeeming features

Love Game
This beat is sick / I wanna take a ride on your disco stick.  I have a real aversion of anyone who uses the word “sick” in this way

I’m confused is Lady Gaga a dentist in an alternate life

Government Hooker
Never has a song repeated the word “Hooker” so many times

Please please make this German electropop stop.

Everything from the synthesised voice to the electric noise is just a complete and utter abuse of the word “Music”.  Delete, delete, delete.

Sexxx Dream
Ew, ew, EW

Jewels n’ Drugs
WHAT in the name of all that is holy is this?!  I had to delete after 1.30 minutes for my own sanity

The electric beat of this physically hurts my ears

Conclusion: I appreciate Lady Gaga does have the talent to produce good songs but I still don’t understand the hype.  I am hoping her next album is a follow-up to Joanne and she doesn’t revert to her early style of electro noise and sexually provocative lyrics.

  1. I think there is no doubt Lady Gaga is a very talented musician and artist, who can also sing. This qualities already distinguish her from many of her compatriots. But similar to Cristina Aguilera, who I think is one of the best contemporary female pop vocalists, Gaga’s music generally is not my cup of tea.
