Ad executive Melanie is teamed up with uptight coworker Donovan to come up with the ultimate Christmas commercial for a new cell phone. To complicate matters, Donovan is also Melanie’s Secret Santa recipient in the annual office gift exchange. Keeping her identity secret, Melanie sends him emails from “Santa” to determine the perfect gift for him. When Donovan mistakenly assumes another co-worker is his Secret Santa, Melanie must work to show Donovan that she’s the only Santa for him.
Thank you Hallmark for giving me a Christmas film which:
- Is set in the city
- The token kid is actually a minor character
- The two characters are actually single and not about to marry someone else!
- Features a cat
- The woman makes the first move and kisses the guy to shut him up
I thoroughly enjoyed this film and don’t care that it is totally ripped off of You’ve Got Mail because clearly originality is not a goal of any of these films.
Donovan was dreamy and I couldn’t stop thinking about how much Melanie looked like Carrie Underwood. Her big sister was actually a decent sounding board and whilst the plot pitted Donovan and Melanie as competing for the promotion, there really wasn’t any angst or fallout from this. It was also much better paced than most Hallmark films with Donovan/Melanie’s friendship/relationship building over a few weeks (as opposed to like three days).
Most eye roll inducing moment: the CGI snow, the “Evergreen” phone which looked exactly like an iPhone and the sleigh – there’s no way that was going anywhere.
