All-Time Favourite Songs

Fleetwood Mac – Thrown Down

Thrown down… like a barricade
Maybe now he could prove to her
That he could be good for her
And they should be together
You’ve shaken your faith in me, no
You’ve shaken my faith in everything else
A decision no one makes, and now you’re going home
Faith is a hard thing to hold on to
Something inside you says I don’t have to
You’re not like other people, you do what you want to …

When I first became obsessed with this song, I felt so guilty falling in love with a) such a recent FM song when they have so many classic songs from the 70s and 80s and b) one without the beautiful Christine McVie, but I absolutely adore this song. I think I’d go as far as to say that if you asked me right now to choose just one favourite song, it would probably be this. I love how autobiographical their songs are generally and I love the story told. The blending of Stevie and Lindsey’s voices in this …. ❤

Def Leppard – Stand Up (Kick Love Into Motion)

I gotta know right now
It’s got to be this time
I wanna show you how
Gonna make you change your mind
There’s an empty chair at my table
There’s an empty look in your eyes
I just happen to be a man
And you happen to be a woman
And we happen to be together
Try to stop this thing comin’
Stand up, kick love into motion
Take a little love and shake it all around …

The lyrics are undeniably cheesy as hell but god I love this song. I don’t even really know why. Just from the first time I heard it I was hooked.

Fleetwood Mac – Dreams

Here I go again, I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself, yeah
It’s only me who wants to wrap around your dreams and
Have you any dreams you’d like to sell?
Dreams of Loneliness, like a heartbeat, drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering
What you had, And what you lost …

I love the harmonies between Stevie, Lindsey, Christine (particularly on the live ‘The Dance’ version) and I love that Stevie wrote it in like 5 minutes about Lindsey. Don’t all fall down in shock but I actually don’t mind The Corrs’ cover of this – maybe because it sounds a bit like a club remix and they didn’t try to replicate the angst and suppressed anger in the original.

Oasis – Wonderwall

And all the roads we have to walk along are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I would
Like to say to you
I don’t know how
Because maybe
You’re gonna be the one who saves me?
And after all
You’re my wonderwall …

Oasis is one of the greatest British bands ever

The Who – Baba O’Riley

I don’t need to fight
To prove I’m right
I don’t need to be forgiven …

I loved this song a long time before CSI:NY ever came into my life so when I started watching the show, it only made me more disposed to like it (the show)!

Toto – Africa

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

Don Henley – The Boys Of Summer

Out on the road today
I saw a deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said,
“Don’t look back. You can never look back.”
I thought I knew what love was,
what did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go …

This is the sort of song you want blaring in your car with the windows down on a hot summer’s day.

Carly Simon – You’re So Vain

I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and
You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain
I’ll bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you? Don’t you?

This song always makes me smile because:

a) Any song which has the rhyme yacht//apricot//gavotte deserves an award ..

b) I thought it was “clowns in my coffee” for the longest time and I still giggle whenever I hear that line.

c) It is one of the original “Fuck you” songs

Bon Jovi – Livin’ On A Prayer

She says: We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got
‘Cause it doesn’t make a difference
If we make it or not
We’ve got each other and that’s a lot
For love – we’ll give it a shot
We’re halfway there
Livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it – I swear
Livin’ on a prayer …

This song needs no explanation!

Hall & Oates – Out Of Touch

Reaching out for something to hold
Looking for a love where the climate is cold
Manic moves and drowsy dreams
Or living in the middle between the two extremes …

I love those crazy 80s guys. Favourite pop/rock/soul duo ever! This song is catchy as hell. I have no idea WHAT is going on in the video – they made it to a remix of the song and it’s just weird (really don’t like the remix!)

Tina Turner – What’s Love Got To Do With It

I’ve been taking on a new direction
But I have to say
I’ve been thinking about my own protection
It scares me to feel this way …

Tina Turner is such a legend.

Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you’ll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you’ll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms …

I loved this song since way before I’d ever watched a single episode of The West Wing but seeing it used in ‘Two Cathedrals’ really highlighted how beautiful it is. I ADORE Mark Knofler’s guitar work in this.

Idina Menzel – I Stand

‘Cause I stand for the power to change,
I live for the perfect day.
I love till it hurts like crazy,
I hope for a hero to save me.
I stand for the strange and lonely,
I believe there’s a better place.
I don’t know if the sky is heaven,
But I pray anyway…

The thing that attracts me to a song the most is the tune. A song could have the most beautiful lyrics in the world but if it doesn’t have a tune that I can obsess over then it won’t make my list. This, however, has both and the lyrics, the lyrics. Quite possibly my favourite song lyrics ever.

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – Ain’t No Mountain High

If you need me, call me
No matter where you are
No matter how far
Just call my name
I’ll be there in a hurry
You don’t have to worry …

This song just cheers me up. I should probably listen to it more!

Foreigner – When It Comes To Love

I never realized
How time was on my side
Lost sight of my perfect world
And the man that ive become
From the damage that i’ve done
It’s so clear to me now

Foreigner have a lot of awesome songs in their repertoire but this one from their most recent album has to be mentioned.  I love saxophone solos in rock music <3.

Stevie Nicks – Doing The Best I Can (Escape From Berlin)

Well because fate causes fortune and fortune takes it away
Well it’s alright, baby… I’m doing the best that I can

This is a little known gem.

Journey – Loved By You

Every time is like the first time tenderly
Loving you is like breathing spring
Seasons change but your heart beats constantly
Count my blessing every day as you love me
As the sunset disappears across the northern sky
You look for forever in my eyes
All I can say, long as I have a voice
I’ll thank God above that I was your first choice …

I am not a girly girl. I am a hopeless romantic when it comes to Fandom but in real life I am incredibly cynical. I can honestly say I have never ever daydreamed about my wedding or thought about dresses or flower arrangements but the second I heard this song, I knew it would be the song I wanted to play at my hypothetical wedding (Trust me, that was a very weird feeling.) ❤ Journey!

The Rolling Stones – Almost Hear You Sigh

I can almost hear you sigh
I can almost hear you cry
On every crowded street
All the places we would meet
What will I do without you
They say that life goes on …

The Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter

Oh, a storm is threat’ning
My very life today
If I don’t get some shelter
Oh yeah, I’m gonna fade away …

This is the song that first got me into the ‘Stones in the first place.

Rebecca Ferguson – All That I’ve Got

This war has started
Rivers parted
But I’m gonna cry no tears
Give it all that I’ve got
I’ll give it all that I’ve got
Let the healing start

I just absolutely adore Rebecca Ferguson.  She is so quiet and unassuming with an awesome voice.  The lyrics to this song <3.

Kelly Clarkson – What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone

Kelly has a killer voice and a number of her songs could probably appear on this list but this is definitely one of my favourites.

S Club 7 – Bring It All Back

Try not to worry ’bout a thing
Enjoy the good times life can bring
Keep it all inside you
Gotta let the feeling show
Imagination is the key
‘Cos you are you’re own destiny
You never should be lonely
When time is on your side

Don’t you know it’s true what they say
Things are sent to try you
But your time’s coming around
So don’t you stop tryin’

Don’t stop, never give up
Hold your head high and reach the top
Let the world see what you have got
Bring it all back to you
Dream of falling in love
Anything you’ve been thinking of
When the world seems to get too tough
Bring it all back to you

S Club 7 were my first ever music obsession.  This is such an uplifting song, it never fails to make me smile.

OneRepublic – Preacher

I took a little faith
And put it in a parking lot
I drove to a strange town
Full of “have” and “have nots”
And as I walked through that storybook life
I was looking for an angel to chase the devil at night

Train – Drive By

Oh but that one night
Is still the highlight
I didn’t need you until I came to
And I was overwhelmed and frankly scared as hell
Because I really fell for you

Placebo – Running Up That Hill

And if I only could,
Make a deal with God,
And get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,

I don’t generally like covers but I think this is my favourite ever cover.

Snow Patrol -What If This Storm Ends?

The perfect halo
Of gold hair and lightning
Sets you off against
The planets last dance
Just for a minute
The silver-forked sky
Lit you up like a star
That I will follow

Jessie J – Who You Are

Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the stars!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It’s okay not to be okay.
Sometimes it’s hard to follow your heart.
Tears don’t mean you’re losing, everybody’s bruising,
Just be true to who you are!

Before Jessie J became a household name, they used this song in Step Up 3 and I fell in love with it.  The lyrics are awesome and that girl can really sing.

Leona Lewis – Bleeding Love

My heart melts into the ground
Found something true
And everyone’s looking round
Thinking I’m going crazy

Kerry Ellis – Defying Gravity

So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky!
As someone told me lately:
“Ev’ryone deserves the chance to fly!”
And if I’m flying solo
At least I’m flying free
To those who’d ground me
Take a message back from me
Tell them how I am
Defying gravity …

It took me a long time to decide which version but I think eventually the dialogue bits on the OBC may get annoying plus I adore the way Kerry does the “Loooook to the Western Sky!” Plus helllllo Brian May!

Taylor Swift – Sparks Fly

Drop everything now
Meet me in the pouring rain
Kiss me on the sidewalk
Take away the pain
’cause I see sparks fly whenever you smile

Coldplay – Violet Hill

It was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow, white snow

Jack Savoretti – Blackrain

The building’s getting tall
Watch it scrape the sky
Can’t see the stars at all through the city lights
